Log Insight 2.5: Internationalization (I18N) and Localization (L10N)

Log Insight 2.5 now supports multiple different languages for UI users!

What is it?

From Wikipedia:

In computing, internationalization and localization (other correct spellings are internationalisation and localisation) are means of adapting computer software to different languages, regional differences and technical requirements of a target market.

Languages

The product now supports:

  • French
  • German
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Traditional Chinese

How it works

The enhancement is primarily client browser driven. The language of the client browser by default dictates the language in which the Log Insight UI appears. For example, if you switch you client browser to German and refresh the Log Insight UI, you will see that the UI is now in German.

Now, you will notice that two parts of the UI remain in english:

  • Events
  • Fields / Content Packs

This means that events must be sent to Log Insight in English — especially if you want content packs to work — and content packs — including the notes in content packs — remain in English. You may be wondering why content packs remain in English. For query definitions the reason is because attempting to translate partial keywords (e.g. globs or regex) would be basically impossible. The notes sections could technically be translated, but today they remain in English
It is also important to note that Log Insight administrators have the option to force use of the English language in the UI overriding the client browser language section. This can be done from the Language section under Administration > General

Summary

The Log Insight 2.5 UI supportsĀ multiple different language translations that by default are driven by the client browser language setting. Log Insight administrators can force use of the English option under Administration > General.

Important: Parts of the UI remain in English, this includes any events received into the system and any content packs — including the notes in the content pack — used.
