Log Insight 2.5 Beta Now Available!

Log Insight 2.5 was announced at VMware Barcelona and today VMware released the Log Insight 2.5 Beta. Unless you are part of the Log Insight community you probably have not heard about all the new features that have been made available since Log Insight 2.0. To date, three Tech Previews (TP) have been released for Log Insight 2.5 and today’s beta serves as TP4.

Log Insight Agent: Building a Configuration for Product X

A covered how to configure the free Log Insight Windows agent when the Log Insight 2.0 beta was released. Since the agent’s announcement, the demand for the agent and the appropriate configuration has increased daily. The most common request I have received to date is, “how do I monitor logs for product X using the Log Insight Windows agent?” In this post, I would like to take a deeper look at the filelog configuration option of the agent and how to approach building configuration sections.

Log Insight Cluster: Data Not Balanced Across Nodes

In Log Insight 2.0 a scale-out feature was introduced. The best practice when using scale-out is to configure an external load balancer in front of the cluster and send all ingestion traffic (i.e. syslog and ingestion API) to the load balancer instead of directly to a node. The reason for this best practice is to assist with balancing data across nodes and also to provide ingestion high availability. In this post, I would like to discuss why data may not be balanced across a Log Insight cluster whether a load balancer is used or not.

Log Insight 2.0: Service Types

Log Insight 2.0 introduced the ability to scale-out in addition to scale-up. With this change, a Log Insight instance is capable of playing different roles or service types. These include:

  • Standalone (available in 1.x)
  • Master (new in 2.0)
  • Worker (new in 2.0)

NOTE: Service types should not be confused with node types. Every Log Insight instance (or node) is capable of running any service it is matter of what service is enabled on the node.
I would like to discuss the differences between these service types and some important considerations to keep in mind.

VMworld 2014 public voting and my 6 sessions

As I am sure you heard, voting for VMworld 2014 sessions is now open! Based on my count this morning, it looks like 1,179 public sessions are available to select from (though only 1,178 to vote on as session 1645 appears to have been submitted by accident). All in, I have 6 sessions up for public voting! Now you may be wondering why I submitted 6 public sessions, how many private sessions I submitted, and what I will do if they all get accepted. Read on to hear the reasoning behind my approach this year.
